The Big Debate – Have we betrayed our women?

Two weeks ago, SABC 2 aired the final broadcast of the first season of the Big Debate. The topic that week was on sexual violence and whether and how we all complicit in it.

On the panel were:

Activist and former Chairperson of the Commission for Gender Equality, Nomboniso Gasa;
Minister of Perpetual Minors (Women, Children, Youth and People Living with Disbailities), Lulu Xingwana;
ANC Women’s League Representative, Lulama Nare;
Deputy Minister of Justice & Constitutional Development, Andries Nel;
Researcher and Activist, Lisa Wetten;
CONTRALESA General Secretary, Manene Tabane.

Kwezilomso Mbandazayo (@KwezilomsoM) makes a powerful contribution in one of the inserts and decries the Ministry of Justice’s failures and lack of urgency in preventing, policing and successfully trying sexual violence. “Kusengathi upholile,” she tells him from the audience.

Incensed by Minister Lulu blaming satanism for violence against womyn and children (edited out), ACDP President, Kenneth Meshoe proposing that patriarchy can be saved, Tabane actually condoning parents marrying their girl-children off to old men, I also have a good at each of them as a contributor from the floor.

Also, I looked a mess.
